The above selection box is similar to what is shown on most websites that offers discount and “cheap” special occasion dresses. And it’s not something to get excited about.
The idea is appealing. You love this gown but it is green, and you hate green. But look at all of the available colors! Hooray!
There’s a reason that these sites offer dresses in every color of the rainbow, while the designer’s sites only show the dress available in just a few hues. According to Mac Duggal, “The fact is you’ll never know which color you are going to get when you see so many colors. Counterfeiters use damaged, leftover material that they can get cheaply to offer such low prices. These materials often fall apart, rip easily, or even give young girls hives and rashes.”
What do we mean when we say you never know which color you’ll get? Well, for example, if you wanted a white dress and walked into a store, you would know exactly which shade of white you envisioned. The store would do everything to find you that perfect white tint you desired. However, when you choose the color white from an online counterfeiter you could be getting white, off-white, bone, or even ivory. It makes an even bigger difference when you order bright colors. Mac Duggal warns that, “you could choose the color ‘Pink,’ but what you could really get is a neon pink or light pink. It really comes down to which materials are left over, and sometimes you may even get two different color sewn together on a dress.”
Girls look forward to the idea of getting a dress in so many colors, but in reality it’s more of a curse than a blessing. When you look at a dress in your local prom retailer, you know what color you are going to get. Legitimate prom retailers are going to be there for you every step of the way. If you are deciding between a store or a counterfeit online deal, Mac Duggal asks you to remember this one thing, “These stores and honest designers are willing to fight for you and get you the dress of your dreams. Counterfeiters NEVER have your best interests at heart. There is no such thing as returns with prom dress counterfeiters.”

Overseas counterfeit websites (many of them China-based) target teenage girls by stealing images from top designers. They then claim to make the exact dress in multiple colors at a discounted rate, and millions of girls fall for their scam.
But when your dress is delivered, it’s hardly like the dress in the photograph. If you even get a dress, you are shipped a cheap knock-off with problems in the stitching, beading, and fit. Some girls only get pieces of the dress and are expected to sew it together!
Jan Ferracuti from popular prom dress store Bridal Elegance knows first hand the experience that mothers and teens go through when accidentally ordering a counterfeit prom dress. “During prom season, we have mothers and daughters frantically searching for a prom dress at the last minute because they ordered their prom dress online from a random website and it either didn’t come in or it doesn’t look like what they ordered. They will show us a picture of what they thought they were ordering and the dress that they received. It’s very sad- not only does the girl not have her dress, her mom is out the money she spent for the counterfeit dress.”
Featured on the Today Show, one young high school girl, Alexandra Marschall, had high hopes when she found that perfect dress online for a discounted rate. However, when she received the dress it was in pieces and the beading was actually left in a separate bag!

How to Tell if a Website is Selling Fake Prom Dresses

Seriously- scammers are everywhere to target prom goers arming themselves with fake designer dresses, charging hundreds of dollars for a counterfeit dress or a dress that they may never receive at all.
For a high schooler - Prom is special. This is their red carpet event and most teen girls, they dream for a beautiful gown from many different websites on the Internet. Sadly, girls are trapped into websites that sell these dresses enticing them to a deep discount and that is a problem.
Before purchasing your dress for your prom, homecoming, or special event, we urge that you do your due deligence to ensure that you don’t get scammed!
We list some of the tell talesigns to look for when shopping online.
1 . Pay close attention to the advertised retail price. Retail prices should be consistent across all authorized retailers. If you discover a store or website that offers a brand name dress substantially at a lower price than others, assume that the dress is a low quality counterfeit fake. Also, be aware of words like “inspired by,” “imitation,” “fake” and “similar to” that appear on the store’s website or advertisement.
2. Just having an Ssl seal or Paypal seal at the bottom of a webpage is not enough. The seals should be active- not just an image. When you hover over the seal with your mouse or click the seal, a new website should pop up. Scam websites will steal these seals and have them on their webpage as a jpg. It's also a good idea to see if an e-retailer is a member.
3. Challenge the authenticity of the brand name being advertised. Every authentic dress will bear a hangtag and inside garment label with the brand’s logo. If yourdress is missing a tag or label, it may be a fake reproduction. Also, double check the spelling of the brand being represented.
4. Look for reviews at top prom websiteor prom website association. E-commerce retailers are registered with prom associations to ensure authenticity of the websites and it’s products.
5. The website is selling counterfeit prom dresses if a specific dress issold in many different colors, Designers usually offer a dress in, at most only a handful of colors.
6. Take note of the pictures displayed on the website or advertisement. If the imagery used includes amodel with a blurred out or pixelated face, cropped off head or displays any other suspicious photo-changing feature, the website or advertisement may be selling counterfeit dresses.
7. Take note of style numbers. Often, thestyle numbers are differentthan the other American websites where you have seen the dress. Sometimes, there is not even a style number. The real style numbers are created by the authentic prom dress designers and are utilized by all retailers so that we may reference the same dress without confusion.
8. If an overseas website says they'll mark yourpackage as a “gift” to save on shipping costs, that should raise a major red flag. Counterfeit manufacturers do this to avoid detection by U.S. Customs officials.
9. Visit the website’s Contact Us page. An address in the United States as well as a telephone should be listed,not just an email address. And it is also important to double check at the telephone number isn't being forwarded to another foreign country.

How can I tell if a website is selling counterfeit dresses?
- Don't let the pictures fool you. Counterfeit sites often use photos stolen directly from authentic brands. Just because a site has an authentic picture does not mean they are selling an authentic dress!
- Pay close attention to the advertised retail price. Retail prices are generally consistent across all retailers. If you find a dress priced substantially lower than the others it is probably a knock-off. If it looks too good to be true, chances are it probably is!
- Beware of "made-to-order" dresses. If the website is selling "made-to-order” dresses or dresses with custom sizes and a high variety of colors, this website is probably producing cheap knockoffs.
- Visit the website's "Contact Us" page. Many websites offering counterfeit dresses are operated overseas. Look for an address in the United States as well as a phone number, not just an email address. Call the seller to speak with a real person and ask questions to determine whether the business is legitimate.
- Read the seller's return policies. You should know these policies even when dealing with a genuine retailer. Beware that, if you are cheated, it can be extremely difficult to obtain a refund from a company located outside the United States.
- Find out more about the seller's reputation. Learn as much as possible about the company's reputation. Perform an Internet search for positive or negative customer reviews.
- Visit the designer's website. Most designers will have a "Where to buy” page on their website. If the website in question is not listed as an authorized retailer, it may be part of a counterfeit operation.
- Watch out for Auction sites. Designers generally do not allow selling on sites like eBay, Amazon and AliExpress. If you see your dream dress on one of these sites, it's probably not the real thing!

Why should I avoid counterfeit sites?
- Many customers who order off these sites never even receive their dress! These overseas websites can disappear the next day and there is no one to be held accountable.
